Dental implants in China: the process and the public price rules

ImplantsChecked 4 Nov 2026

A dental implant is often done in stages over several months, which matters if you travel for it. In public hospitals, China caps the fee for placing an implant and buys implants in bulk nationally; private clinics set their own prices. This page explains both. It doesn't recommend a clinic or a treatment: whether an implant suits you is a question for a dentist who has examined you.

How an implant is done

A dentist places the implant in the jawbone, the bone heals around it, and then the replacement tooth is fixed on top. Cleveland Clinic puts that healing at three to nine months (Cleveland Clinic, Jun 2026). The American Dental Association says some patients wait up to several months for the implant to integrate before the tooth goes on, while others have the implant and the tooth placed in one visit.

What that means for a trip

If your dentist plans a healing period, expect either two trips or a long stay, and ask before you book how many visits there will be and how far apart. A 30-day visa-free stay, where it applies to you, would not cover a three-month wait; the visa guide explains the options.

China's price rules for implants

In September 2022 the National Healthcare Security Administration set about ¥4,500 as the limit on the medical service fee for one implant at large (tertiary) public hospitals, and let regions with higher labour costs ask for a higher limit (gov.cn, Sep 2022; Yicai Global, Sep 2022). The limit covers the service of placing the implant: the implant and the crown are charged on top (Yicai Global, Sep 2022; China Daily, Aug 2023).

A national bulk purchase then cut implant prices by 55% on average, according to the administration (China Daily, Jan 2023; China Daily, Aug 2023). Hospitals began charging the lower prices in the spring of 2023 (China Daily, Jan 2023; China Daily, Mar 2023).

These rules apply first to public hospitals. Private clinics are asked to charge reasonable prices but have no fixed limit (gov.cn, Sep 2022; China Daily, Aug 2023).

What to ask before you book

  • A written quote that lists the service fee, the implant, the abutment and the crown separately
  • The brand and model of the implant, and whether it was part of the national bulk purchase
  • How many visits, how far apart, and what happens if the bone needs more time
  • Who checks the implant once you are home, and who pays if something needs fixing
  • Copies of your scans and a record of the implant's brand and model to take home

Prices from private clinics

We don't list private dental clinics or their prices on this page, because we have not found prices we could check against a second source. If you send us an inquiry, we tell you what we know, and whether any provider we mention pays us.
