Do you need a visa to come to China for treatment?

Can I come? · checked 28 Oct 2026

Usually yes. China's visa-free entry is for business, tourism, family, friends, exchanges and transit. Medical treatment is not on that list, so most patients apply for a visa before they travel.

What visa-free entry covers

China lets citizens of many countries visit without a visa for up to 30 days. The Beijing government (May 2025) lists the purposes as business, tourism, family reunion, visiting friends, exchange and transit. Treatment is not on that list, and we have found no official statement that a short check-up is allowed visa-free. Some regional schemes and mutual agreements between countries have their own terms, so ask the Chinese embassy or consulate where you live before you travel.

The visa most patients use

The S2 visa (for private affairs) is the one agency guides describe for treatment, used with a letter from the hospital that confirms the treatment and its dates. Your embassy decides which visa fits your case and what it needs from you.

  • A passport valid beyond your stay, with a blank page (many embassies ask for six months)
  • A letter from the hospital or clinic that is treating you
  • Proof of how you will pay
  • Any extra papers your embassy asks for

Before you book anything

Get the hospital's letter and your visa before you pay for flights. If you send us an inquiry, we tell you what we know about getting that letter.
