How to check a hospital in China before you go

Can I trust it? · checked 28 Oct 2026

Here is how to check a hospital in China yourself before you trust it, or us. You are not alone in caring: in a 2024 Medical Tourism Association survey, 97% of people who had travelled for treatment said trust was one of the most critical factors in choosing a provider.

Start from official lists

City governments publish English lists of hospitals with international services. Shanghai has a Find a Hospital directory and an international medical services portal; Beijing has a medical guide to major hospitals. A Chinese Hospital Association report counted 850 medical institutions in 57 mainland cities offering international medical services in 2024 (eHangzhou, Mar 2026).

Accreditation

Joint Commission International (JCI) accredits hospitals worldwide and keeps a public directory. Beijing United Family Hospital became the first JCI-accredited hospital in China in 2005. Many strong public hospitals are not JCI-accredited, so treat it as one signal, not the only one.

Questions to ask any agent, including us

  • Who pays you, and how much?
  • Is the hospital licensed, and can I see its name in Chinese to check it myself?
  • Will you share my details with anyone without asking me first?
  • Can I see the hospital's written quote, not your summary of it?

Be careful with

Anyone who approaches you near a hospital offering to get you seen faster, and anyone who will not tell you, in writing, who pays them and how much. That includes us.
